silk distinguish
No matter if it’s some special occasion, formal event or the wedding preparation, the pure and luxurious silk is the part of everyone’s dream shopping. The dreamy soft and fine silk fabric looks extremely gorgeous and tempting in almost any kind of clothing item, but do you know that the silk available in the market, with the heavy price tags, can be fake! This may turn out to be shocking news for many but it’s a reality that many silk fabrics claiming to be ‘real silk’ are not 100% real in fact. The high amount that you are going to invest in your favorite fabric’s clothing item should not go to drain! Therefore, we will give you some easy tips to distinguish the real natural silk from the fake one.
What Is Natural Silk?
Firstly, you must understand what the real silk fabric is. It’s a natural fiber made up of protein obtained from the cocoon of an insect called silk worm. The making of the 100% pure silk is an expensive process that’s why the natural silk is costly. There are various kinds of silk such as Mulberry silk, Muga silk, Spider silk, velvet and Charmeus silk are the exclusive royal silk fabrics.
What is the Difference between Expensive and Cheap quality Silk?
Usually the prices of silk vary due to its quality, production, and supplies expenses. The fine quality organic silk is more expensive because of sustainability management too. The real silk has a unique luster, fine finishing, and organic dyeing process. The silk fabrics with the mixture of polyester or viscos have the lower price than the original pure silk fabric but it also reduces natural shine, softness, and elegant royal feel of the fabric.
What is the Major Difference between the Real Silk and Artificial Silk?
Here are some salient features that distinguish the real silk fabric with the artificial silk:
Pure Silk:
Natural Fiber- Obtained from insect larvae.
Protein Fiber- The protein fiber of silk is mainly composed from fibroin of cocoons.
Has Good Strength- Silk is a fiber which is strongest of all-natural fibers and it can withstand a lot of pulling pressure due to its great tensile strength.
Damaged by Moth- Being a natural fiber it needs much care and can be damaged by moths.
Artificial Silk:
Man-Made Fiber- Or faux silk is prepared in the textile industry by mixing rayon or viscose.
Cellulosic Fiber- The cellulose fibers are prepared by dissolving pulp.
Weak Fiber- Because of the close resemblance to real silk, artificial silk feels smooth and lustrous too but it is weaker in nature and can wrinkle easily.

Cost of the Fabric:
Expectation- The genuine silk is much pricey and more expensive than any other fabric. The natural sources, material, preparation and supplies of the real silk raise its price.
Reality- Most of the time the lower than expectation price indicates that the fabric is not 100% pure silk. Although this test cannot be crucial one as some company has higher prices of synthetic silk fabric too.
Touch the Silk Test:
Expectation- You should touch and hold the fabric with your finger tips and rub it. A 100 % real silk will make you feel warmth once you rub it.
Reality- If the fabric in your hand feels soft and smooth but it doesn’t make you feel warmth when you rub, it would most probably be artificial or synthetic silk.
Pass Through A Ring:
Expectation- The real silk of lower ply can be easily and comfortable passed through as narrow a space as a ring-hole because it’s a naturally soft and smooth fabric.
Reality- The artificial silk will get stuck or will feel hard while pulling out of the hole of a ring.

Check the Luster and Shine of the Fabric:
Expectation- The natural silk has a specific lutre and shines which makes it distinguished from all other silky fabrics. The surface color of the pure silk seems to change by reflecting the light.
Reality- The ordinary and synthetic silk has same white shine which makes it look ordinary.
Observe the Texture of The Silk Fabric:
Expectation- The natural silk fabric has a subtle uniqueness and elegance in its own way of naturally prepared texture. You may notice some unevenness in the texture of the real silk if you pull it and observe closely.
Reality- If the fabric is generally flawless in texture; evidently that it’s not the pure silk. Synthetic silk appears to be perfectly woven although some imperfections are also added to it sometimes to pass it as a real silk.
Burn the Fabric Test:
Expectation- This is considered as a best test to identify the real silk. You can take some threads of the fabric to test and burn it. The natural fabric will burn like natural hair and smell the same. The flame will be invisible and will stop burning as the flame ends. The ash turns into black dusty powder when touched with finger.
Reality- The artificial silk fabric burns like a synthetic material and produces a smell as if the plastic is burnt. There is a clear flame of the artificial silk fabric and it does burn like a plastic too.
The Chemical Test:
Expectation –The final and crucial test to confirm a real silk is chemical test.
Take a mixture of Copper Sulphate, Glycerine, caustic soda, water and dip a sample of silk in it. A real silk will dissolve within few seconds in this mixture.
Reality- The artificial silk will never dissolve in this mixture.
